Don't you want me baby?

phil oakey
Phil Oakey circa 1981

Make up on men looks great if you have the bone structure to pull it off, hello David Bowie and Phil Oakey, if not you could end up looking like a brickie in drag a la Twisted Sister or perhaps an 80s wrestler hello Ultimate Warrior and Leigion of Doom.

However make up for men be having a renaissance, famously Jean Paul Gaultier tried to market make up for men about 6 years ago, well Superdrug have launched a range of beauty products aimed soley at men. They include Guyliner, eye pencils and Manscara, a clear gel for lashes and brows, with plans to expand the range if all goes well.

Aggy's new 'do

aggy
Agyness' new mop

The Agyness crop may have been crowned the most influential hairstyle of the decade, despite it being a total rip off of Marie Fredriksson from Roxette's 'do. Now the model has opted for a totally different cut. Her tresses now form a Karen O style blunt fringed, bowl cut bob, a look also favoured by the indie Girls Aloud - Ipso Facto. Expect a nation of teens and twenty-somethings to follow suit.

Trucker Caps

Ashton Kutcher sporting a trucker cap

The origins of the biggest fashion fad of 2002 has come into dispute, after Justin Timberlake claims he made the trucker cap cool not Ashton Kutcher. Today he told the Metro "It's funny, I keep hearing Ashton Kutcher say how he was responsible. I was wearing them when I was 17." In all fairness Timberlake was wearing them when they were still the headwear of choice for 100,000 rednecks, and was probably in NSync at the time - hardly the doyens of fashion for American teens.

Style Nazi's

Snog, Marry, Avoid

P.S. has been wanting to blog about this for a while, with a myriad of make-over programmes on our TV's BBC 3 have unleashed Snog, Marry, Kill er, I mean Snog, Marry, Avoid. Where 'Freaks' including Club 18-30 slappers and cyber-goths (who knew there was any left after the torching of Camden) are turned into manniquins from Zara. It is either genius or Grazia's style Nazi's go V for Vendetta, it's hard to tell. I'm all for the sarcastic advice of POD "You look like a drag-queen with a hangover" but for the love of god, somebody need to give that perma-tanned patronising bitch of a host Jenny Frost a make under for sure; or perhaps just a personality transplant.

Brit Resort

Afshin Feiz Resort collection

With what seems every fashion house bringing out resort collections, its fabulous to see Brit designer Afshin Feiz bringing out his own, offering a sneaky peek at his Spring/Summer 2009 collection. The capsule range has all of Feiz trademarks, 50's girlie silhouttes with cinched waists, as well as tailored shorts and slacks paired with blouses. It is no wonder that Feiz has been declared the Visionary Award Winner for this upcoming season at On|Off in September.

Somebody's Watching Me

Lauren Hutton for Mango

One of P.S.'s favourite movies has to be a lost gem TV movie from the 70s called Somebody's Watching Me directed by none other than John Carpenter. Which sees the main protagonist loopy heroine Lauren Hutton terrorised by an unknown stalker. Well P.S. always wondered what became of the movies star, well it seems she has become the face of Mango at the age of 65. Hutton will be starring in ad campaigns for the Spanish labels Autumn/Winter 2008/2009 campaign.

Fake Punks

It seems for once YBA Damien hirst has been ripped off himself, after discovering his purchase of £80,000-worth of vintage punk clothing, bought online was fake. Hirst intended to exhibit the pieces belivied to be from famed Kings Road boutique Sex, co-founder of the store Malcolm McLaren identified the clothes as fakes. McLaren commented "I felt terrible, but they were fakes, seeing these clothes, I said, 'Wow, they've gone to great lengths to manufacture the labels, and distress the fabrics.' But clearly they were not the fabrics we used 35 years ago, and the stitching was totally different."

... All I got was this lousy slogan t-shirt

holland
Hollands tee

Contrary to popular belief P.S. does feel bad when I make some sarky comment about something charity based, even when it is preposterous - a swimathon for poorly goldfish and such. Well poor man's Katherine Hamnett, Henry Holland has struck again with another poorly designed slogan tee - Lives Not Knives, as part of celeb-trash masquerading as high-fashion rag Grazia's Lives for Knives campaign. Which sees Henry Holland, Katharine Hamnett and Sophia Kokosalaki designing t-shirts for the cause, it might be a good cause but the tees crap, Lives Not Knives he must have spent all day thinking up that one.

Ask Hadley

hadley
Hadley Freeman

On a miserable day like today, nothing cheers P.S. up more than reading Hadley Freeman's weekly column Ask Hadley. It's well known that hemlines are dictated by economic trends, hence mini skirts in the swinging 60s - good times, and maxi skirts in the 3-day week, gravediggers on strike 70s - bad times. Freeman's musings on the impending credit crunch certainly made me giggle "Something called "statement coats" are going to be very big. But of course! It's a two-in-one: a coat keeps you warm and talks for you because your mind will be too occupied with fears of bankruptcy to conjure up any conversation of your own!" Read the full article here.

Frost French has been saved after creative directors Sadie Frost and Jemima French put their business into administration. The duo had managed to save the labels Camden store, but had to close the Kings Road boutique and temporarily suspend trading on their website. Whilst her sister spent last few weeks ODing on a cocktail of Viagra and cocaine (as reported by The Sun) forced to sell her old tat on eBay, Pixie Geldof has been tapped for a collaboration with New Look. The deal is £80,000 to design and model an eight-piece collection, nice work if you can get it! A source told The Mirror "The deal is virtually identical to the one Lily Allen signed. But whereas Lily's was met with a slightly muted response, Pixie's is expected to race out of stores."

No More Heroes

Who - Five O'Clock Heroes ft. Agyness Deyn

It might have seemed liked a smart move to get supermodel of the moment Agyness deyn to sing on their track, but it's something 'Five O'Clock Heroes' are starting to regret. Antony Ellis commented "Whenever we have an interview now, all anyone ever asks us about is Aggy. It can be really frustrating when the questions should be about music, not about who Aggy's dating and stuff like that." It sounds like what happenned with Nico and The Velevt Underground if you ask P.S., hopefully Deyn would get addicted to heroin and die of a brain haemorrhage tho.

World's first grass flip-flops give stressed Brits a spring in t
Flip-Flops

In a bizarre publicity stunt Krispy Kreme doughnuts have been questioning the public, and found half of the 1000 people asked were stressed due to lack of contact with nature. Kripsy Kreme's solution, creating the world’s first grass flip-flops, which take three weeks to grow and with proper horticultural skills a la Titchmarsh can remain grassy for four months. Katie McDermott from Krispy Kreme commented “There’s currently a lot of uncertainty in the city so what better way to escape the concrete jungle than by slipping on a pair of grass flip-flops and walking around in your own mobile meadow." You can get your mitts on a pair in London, as they are handed out to commuters; P.S. can't help but think perhaps they should have just given away loads of doughnuts instead.

Standing in the way of control

BethDitto
Ditto

Fashion and politics don't really tend to mix well, for every Carla Bruni there is a Harriet Harman in a stab-proof vest; well that hasn't stopped Nick Knight and SHOWstudio from being all political this week. Screening art, movies and such on the subject, the final film of the week has seen Knight collaborate with larger-than-life (i.e. fat) singer Beth Ditto, in a short entitled Feminist which probably doesn't do much to dispel the myth that all feminists are fat lesbians. Frankly its a pretentious pile of crap which sees Ditto jiggling about in XXXL Christopher Kane and McQueen creations.

The Black Issue

obama
Barack Obama
It's still debatable whether presidential hopefully Barack Obama was the muse for Versace's latest menswear line, but one things for certain he has another Italian who holds him as a muse. Franca Sozzani, editor of Vogue Italia, admitted he was the inspiration for the magazine's already-legendary July 2008 "Black" issue. Sozzani commented "America is ready for a black president, so why are we not ready for a black model?" The July edition was a sell-out success, which featured an interview with Obama's wife Michelle. Its impact is already being felt throughout the industry, with the demand for black models on the up.

Zandra Rhodes, image Ben Charles Edwards

My it's a full on designers of glam rock day, all we need is Ossie Clark for a hat trick! Zandra Rhodes is promoting the new Sony Giga Jukebox system, which stores a whopping 40,000 tracks, and plays different types of music in each of your rooms.

She might be better known for being a fan of the Archers these days, but Rhodes does loves her music dressing rock royalty throughout the 70s including Queen, Marc Bolan and even Rod Stewart. Zandra commented "They (Queen) phoned me up to come and see me and asked me to design some things. I didn't even know what they played! They had their outfits stolen a couple of times and had to have remakes, so that was a compliment really, although I don't know if it was just a Freddie addict who stole them or what!"

As espected by a woman who lives in a mutli-coloured penthouse her musical tastes differ from the norm, being a big fan of Kraftwerk and Lou Reed, she commented "I wouldn't want to listen to pop music - good God, How awful. I might tolerate going to a concert but I certainly wouldn't like to listen to pop music to work to, no way!"

It seems a month doesn't go by without Nike unleashing another amazing collaboration, this time they have hooked up with Accept & Proceed. A&P's David Johnston commented "Most of the themes that we came up with celebrated the innovation and technology found within Nike’s footwear products." The results see the customisation of a range of kicks (including Air Max 90s, Air Classic BW and Air Max Plus)by Steven Wilson, Jon Burgerman, Oliver Hibert and Andy Forshaw.

New York's Clock Tower is set to get a makeover from everyones favourite fashion Muppet Donatella Versace. Naomi and Stefano, i-D August 2008

Cruising for a bruising or at least a libel suit is factious bint Naomi Campbell, as the supermodel guest edits The Mirror's 3am section this past week. Such gems have included "I think the term 'supermodel' gets thrown around too much nowadays. Models need to earn their stripes - I just think the term is used a little too loosely. Kate Moss is obviously a supermodel but after Gisele, I don't think there's been one." As well as praising her frenemy Victoria Beckham "We share girl stuff and she is so funny, people just don't know her or get her. She also works incredibly hard - that girl works her a**e off. And she's a mother of three - that can't be easy." Who would have thought she was a) she was so opinionated and b) capable of stringing a sentance together, other than a community service one.

Tatty Devine A/W 2008-2009

The schools have finally broken up for the summer, so P.S. thought I would bring my readers news of Tatty Devine's latest collection Attack of the 50ft Jewellery. The collection takes inspiration from back to school stationary, adorn yourself in giant paper clip necklaces, and pencil brooches or be a class geek and sport a gold (or silver) good work star. For something a bit classier what about crystal pen nib necklaces and cufflinks adorned with Swarovski crystals.

She blinded me with science. And hit me with technology.

Back in the 80s and 90s Levi had the coolest ads on TV, perhaps with the exception of Guinness, anyway before P.S. gets sidetracked check out this amazing viral ad (above.) What a load of Crank

crank dat

The man behind one of the crappest songs of recent years - Crank Dat - you know the kind of song which makes you wish you were deaf - strangely favoured by both Chavs and Rahs, must be something to do with inbred genes ... Anyway Soulja Boy has signed a deal with Yums shoes, in a multi-year sneaker and apparel contract with the Dallas-based clothing company. The Block Star sneakers and clothing line, will be produced in collaboration with Tex a graffiti artist, will debut around the time of his second album; due in the Autumn. If it's anything like that godawful piece of trash song its going to be one to avoid!

For the love of god, it seems gimps of the moment Henry Holland and Alexa Chung are teaming up together to present a fashion show on Channel Four's T4 strand called Frock Me!, a title which even surpasses Holland's Lame slogan tee, er slogans. Alexa Chung may have topped the Guardian's Summer Cool list but she lacks any true sense of orignal style, instead acting like some 60s groupie whos been dragged through Rokit backwards and forwards, and then backwards again. The biggest fashion faux pax to hit the channel since Richard Whiteley's infamous tie wearing.

Baggy Trousers

Detroit Free Press guide to wearing jeans

I think most of P.S.'s readers are aware of builder bum, not actually having it heaven forbid, but the sight of middle aged men flashing their buttocks. Well if your in Flint, Michigan you could face a fine for having low riding jeans, the bizarre story cropped up in the CR blog, where Michigan officials are attempting to enforce rules based on indecent exposure laws. Resulting in offenders getting away with a stern warning, fine or even a prison sentance depending on the level of arse (or should that be ass) on show.

“It’s not about individual rights; it’s about values,” explained the bill’s sponsor, Del. Algie Howell Jr. (D-90th District). “The way you dress does have something to do with how you behave.” Of course its well known that the low riding trousers in black communities came from hand me downs, the bigger the trousers the bigger your older brother is and the less hassle you will encounter. Perhaps the UK could bring in a similar system with girls (usually fat ones) who sport velour tracksuits that expose thongs and excess flab.

Dead Celeb-tees

monroe
Dead Celeb, Marilyn Monroe

P.S. thought that I had seen it all with the never-ending celebrity ranges hitting the streets, just look as those odd Bet Lynch inspired Lindsay Lohan ankle warmer things which are interesting, in a fairly gross off putting sort of way. Well long-dead celeb Marilyn Monroe is having her name attached to clothing line, very much in the spirit of plastering dead artist's work on biscuit tins if you ask P.S., as BLA in America (which owns the rights to 400 archive photos of Monroe) has teamed up with Blues Clothing, to create an entire fashion collection using the actress's name. The range is said to include the usual range of dresses, tees, trousers and underwear. President of BLA Michelle Minieri commented "We have had the most success with apparel licenses specifically focusing on the retro look, so we think that Blues Clothing will follow in the same direction. We expect the line to be trendy, fashionable and girly just like Marilyn was in person."

Lynda-Carter
Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman

Fashion designers can have some strange muses, whether its themselves (hello Karl Lagerfeld and Kate Moss) or Barack Obama (Versace - purpotedly) the next collection by Diane von Furstenburg is inspired by Wonder Woman.

The quirky collection encompasses the vibrant palette and star emblem of the super-heroine, and is a collaboration with Warner Bros and DC Comics. DVF's capsule collection will help to raise money for Vital Voices Global Partnership, for the empowerment of female entrepreneurs around the world. Von Furstenberg commented "Wonder Woman is the ultimate symbol of female strength, independence and freedom. When Warner Bros. approached me to collaborate, I immediately thought it was a fun idea that would reinforce my belief in women and commitment to their empowerment. The collection will inspire every woman to be the Wonder Woman she wants to be." This could explain DVF's stance on the CDFA's rules on timekeeping at New York fashion week, so expect a beating if you turn up late at Bryant park.

Vivienne Loves ...

Vivienne Westwood, circa 1976

Well it seems the rumours about Vivienne Westwood thinking the Sex and the City movie was crap, are unfounded. The maverick designer told Vogue online "I stayed throughout the film, and was overjoyed to see Sarah Jessica in her beautiful wedding dress; furthermore, I have been delighted to notice recently how well young girls are dressing, and that they have clearly been inspired by the film."

I was actually shocked by Westwood's comments, how could the punk doyenne say something so conventional, is she mellowing with old age. In all fairness most 'fans' of the show/movie have a)not read Candice Bushnell's book, b)only caught on when it came out on DVD and c)are like Charlotte, the Sandra Morris of the group - enough said!

Kaneshiro will be the first Asian model to appear in one of the brand's advertising campaigns. He commented "I have always been a great admirer of Giorgio Armani, not only for his remarkable accomplishment as master of style but I very much respect his enduring support of the film industry." Armani added "I am excited to collaborate with Takeshi on this new advertising campaign. He is a film and style icon in Asia where his fame transcends cultures both East and West. His sense of effortless style is very contemporary and sophisticated and together with his good look makes him the ideal testimonial for Emporio Armani."

The BBC's ethical chic Thread campaign has now launched StyleSearch, a competition to find the UK's most stylish and ethical dressers. All you need to do is photograph something ethical you have styled with a short statement explaining how the outfit is ethical.

Konnie Huq - Good to see she's getting work after Blue Peter - one of BBC Thread's reporters commented "Style Search is for everyone, no matter what their style or budget. It is all about being creative, eco-glamorous and expressing yourself through ethical fashion." The winner will get to spend a day with a stylist at September's London Fashion Week, assisting with the styling of the Thread fashion show.
